Whereas , the main roads that travel through Westmeath (#12), Beachburg (#21) and Forester Falls (#7) are county roads with posted speed limits of 50 km/hr; and Whereas , in Westmeath and Beachburg children cross the main road without a crossing guard or crosswalk to attend school; and Whereas , parks and public spaces are located on these roads; and Whereas , sidewalks are found only in certain areas; and Whereas , it is recognized that coordination is required with the County of Renfrew for roads under their jurisdiction; and Whereas , the Township has a responsibility to provide safe and accessible routes for all its different users including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and to encourage an active lifestyle for all ages; and Whereas, limited research of low cost traffic calming strategies successfully implemented in rural Iowa and the UK demonstrates that there may be solutions that could be considered in Whitewater Region; Therefore be it resolved that Council of the Township of Whitewater Region direct staff to develop a traffic calming policy, including consultation and engagement with the County of Renfrew, the Ottawa Valley Active Transportation Alliance, and the public.
